Valencia, 9 October: Remembering a great day in the bullring

Valencia seeks to restore the prestige of its 9 October bullfight with Morante and Roca Rey facing emerging star Tomás Rufo in a major clash at the iconic Calle de Xàtiva bullring.

There was a time when 9 October in Valencia was far more than just another date on the calendar. It was a day associated with intense rivalry and memorable performances. For aficionados of the Calle de Xàtiva bullring, the date evokes afternoons that left their mark on the season: the thrilling mano a mano between Vicente Ruiz “El Soro” and Enrique Ponce, Ponce’s demanding solo performance with a corrida from Victorino Martín, and the masterful performances of José María Manzanares Sr., who so often demonstrated his artistry in the Valencia bullring during the autumn months.

These were years when Valencia stood alongside the traditional season-ending fixtures, attracting the attention of the international bullfighting world on its own merits. Now, the 9 October celebration of the Valencian Community is looking to recover the importance that once made it a key date at the end of the season, with a major clash in the city of Valencia rather than allowing the autumn calendar to simply wind down.

The challenge for the current management has not been to fill the date with an ordinary event, but to rebuild its historical significance by bringing together some of the strongest names in today’s bullfighting. Moving beyond the shadow of the legends who helped establish the reputation of the bullring does not mean lowering expectations; instead, it means allowing the present generation to make its own mark.

That is why the 9 October programme has been built around a major confrontation: Morante de la Puebla and Andrés Roca Rey, two of the leading figures in contemporary bullfighting, will face each other in the Valencia ring.

Completing the line-up is Tomás Rufo, winner at the most recent Fallas festival. The emerging bullfighter arrives with the opportunity to make a statement and establish himself alongside two of the biggest names in the current rankings.

The bulls selected for the occasion will come from the Álvaro Núñez breeding ranch, providing the livestock for an afternoon in which technique, authority and artistry will all be put to the test.

The success of the project will depend on demonstrating that Valencia’s bullring can still attract a strong audience and retain its influence during the final stretch of the season. With a line-up that stands out among the major fixtures of the year, the decision to give this date renewed importance sends a clear message: Valencia does not want to be simply a final stop before the European season draws to a close.

Instead, the ambition is to give the Valencia bullring a starring role once again, at a time when many other arenas have already brought their seasons to an end.

A full weekend of bullfighting in Valencia

The October season does not end with the headline bullfight. The October season ticket at Valencia Bullring has been structured as a complete programme for aficionados throughout the long weekend.

Friday 9 October – 11:00 am. The weekend begins with the spectacular “Maestros de la Calle de Valencia” Recortadores Contest, an exciting display of skill, courage and traditional popular bullfighting entertainment ahead of the major evening bullfight.

Saturday 10 October – 5:30 pm. The focus turns to the future of bullfighting with a novillada without picadors. Yearling bulls from Daniel Ramos will be fought by leading students from the bullfighting schools of Albacete, Alicante, Madrid (Yiyo), Navas del Rey and Valencia.

Sunday 11 October – 5:30 pm. The festive weekend concludes with a novillada with picadors, featuring livestock from Casa de los Toreros.

The line-up brings together three of the most promising young names on the novillero circuit: Juan Alberto Torrijos, Javier Cuartero and Ignacio Garibay.

The 9 October fixture therefore forms the centrepiece of a complete weekend of bullfighting in Valencia, combining established stars, emerging talent and opportunities for the next generation of bullfighters.
